Honks

A good day in the field is better than a bad day at work.

Salmo Trutta

Took the annual trip over Thanksgiving weekend and found that the cold weather kept most folks away.  We fished for two days and the fishing was stellar.  The fish, for the most part seemed much more healthy than in years passed.  There were the normal 14-16 inch snakes, but many were 17+ and had some great girth.  The weather was cold, and on day two the wind blew relentlessly at times, but there were fish to be had.

General Rifle Opener

Since it was the opener of the general rifle deer season here in Utah, we figured there was nothing better we could do than to go catch fish.  Curt and Tyson made a plan and headed for the water.  Fish should be in the shallows by now with the cooler weather we've finally had the last little bit.  The hypothesis was correct, at least early in the AM.  Weather man said that early it would be in the 40's and snowing.  We were prepared, but pleasantly surprised to find mostly clear skies and jacket weather.  Couldn't have asked for anything better.  This was Curt's first stillwater experience for trout.  Literally two minutes in he was hooked up with a cutt.  Not long after that, we were both hooked up again and Curt had a real nice fish on. For about an hour the action was steady, but then it died.  It was a great day to be on the water and not 5 minutes after we loaded up the vehicle to head home the storm was on us and the weather turned nasty.  It was great timing to call it a day.

This one must have been part muskie....or maybe just all cutt!

Duck Opener

The time has finally arrived.  It's time for the big boys to play with our feathered friends.  The flight today was not what we usually see in our opener spot, but we did put 31 birds in the blind.  We shot a lot more big ducks, especially mallards than we usually do, and A LOT less teal than usual.  I think we only shot one green wing, which is very unusual.  Here are some shots of the crew and the ducks.  Big shout out to Curty who went and finished hunter's safety and participated in his first hunt ever today.  Nice work on your limit of green heads Curty!

More Wipers

Blake, Curt, and Tyson were able to get out and chase wipers on the fly again.  Started out blind casting some and Tyson and Blake were able to get some crappies.  As the night progressed there was very little action but were able to find some boils and Curt then showed again why he's the wiper man.  Tyson was able to get one as well before the night set in and we cruised back to the launch.  Amazing fish!

More Muskies

I have to give a shout out to c-dizz, the muskie whisperer, for taking me out today to chase muskies on the fly.  I have had a goal to catch a tiger muskie on my fly rod this year but haven't had a chance to get out until now.  I spent the spring tying up a box full of muskie flies that were inspired by Nick Granato's ideas and creations.  But because of the bar exam could never get out until now.  After picking Nick's brain some, and having c-dizz as a guide, I couldn't fail...right?

Didn't get anything with much size, but boated three muskies today, on three different fly patterns.  So I'd call it a successful first trip.
